Card Sorting
What Is Card Sorting?
Users are asked to sort and group cards that represent your website’s or app’s content. Card sorting can be done in person or online. Meeting participants in person as the advantage of allowing us to observe how users react during the card sorting activity.
Depending on your needs, you can choose between an open card sort and a closed card sort. In an open card sort, users are free to create new content categories. In a closed card sort, users can only use existing categories.
Why Do Card Sorting?
It’s a considerable challenge to organize Web content, especially when you are dealing with a lot of information. Rich information has no value if users can’t find it!
Card sorting can be used to build a website information architecture (blog post in French) or validate an existing one. You want to ensure users will quickly find what they are looking for so they are less likely to leave your site and more inclined to come back in the future.
What Is the Process Surrounding Card Sorting?
First, we work in collaboration to define which content items need to be included in your website or mobile app. Second, the procedure is customized based on your needs. In some cases, imarklab can assist you with a series of card sorts at different milestones of your project.
At the end of the process, we categorize content items and help you structure the information. Our analysis is based on the way users grouped content items in order to provide them with an information architecture that lives up to their expectations.
You wish to validate your new information architecture? Tree Testing is a method used to test the efficiency of a Web or mobile menu structure.
